We are thrilled to share some major milestones and transformative updates from our recent CitizenScience.Asia Leadership Roundtable! As our region’s citizen science footprint continues to expand, our organization is taking bold structural steps to evolve alongside it. This meeting marked the formalization of a new chapter designed to enhance regional collaboration, decentralize decision-making, and open up more avenues for community engagement across Asia.
Here are the key takeaways and exciting updates:
1. A Strategic Structural Evolution for Deeper Engagement
To better support our rapid growth and eliminate organizational bottlenecks, CitizenScience.Asia has officially ratified a governance revamp. While our Board of Directors continues to oversee core legal and strategic resolutions, we are transitioning our operational framework into an agile, project-focused model.
Instead of relying solely on a centralized core team, we are establishing a flexible system under our three primary pillars: Connections, Capacity, and Conversations to better serve our tagline to build these out in the region. See our updated Leadership Council in accordance with this change.
- The Working Group Model: We are introducing autonomous, activity-specific and goal-driven Working Groups that will be given the independence to drive focused initiatives.
- What this means for the Asia Community: This new framework is specifically designed to empower grassroot practitioners. By lowering the barriers to entry, passionate community members, regional advocates, and citizen science champions can now directly lead or contribute to targeted activities without needing to join the core leadership team. This distributes the workload equitably and creates a clear, welcoming succession pipeline for the next generation of changemakers in Asia.
2. Moving Forward with Regional Initiatives
The structural reset serves as the launchpad for a series of highly anticipated regional activities. The roundtable brought together longtime partners and new champions from across the continent—including strong representation from South and Southeast Asia—to kick off an ongoing dialogue on how to unify localized efforts.
- Asia Nature Challenge: The third iteration of this marquee event will be kicking off again this fall, uniting effort across the region to fill in the biodiversity information gap.
- Asian Biodiversity Citizen Science Conference: Planning is actively moving forward to facilitate deeper knowledge-sharing through upcoming regional convenings, expanding on the foundations built during recent Asia Nature Challenge iterations.
- Global Advocacy: Our structural modernization ensures that we have the collective capacity to amplify Asian voices on the global stage, including our ongoing engagement with the Citizen Science Global Partnership (CSGP) and key United Nations Science & Technology Major Groups.
3. Next Steps & How to Get Involved
As part of our commitment to transparency and community-led growth, we will be publishing a comprehensive onboarding guide publicly.
Whether you are an educator, a researcher, a tech developer, or a community organizer, our new Working Groups will offer a space for your voice and expertise. We are looking forward to co-creating the future of citizen science in Asia with you. Stay tuned for the public release of the guides and find out how you can step into a leadership or participatory role in an upcoming project!
