Behold: some of the coolest things Zealandia visitors and members spotted during the Great Sourthern Biobliz 2025!
A bioblitz is when you go out and try to identify different species you see, whether it's birds, bugs, plants, fungi, reptiles, or anything else.
By uploading ...these observations to inaturalistnz, you're helping scientists and researchers with invaluable info and footage!
Zealandia's Conservation Team is particularly interested in mokomoko (skinks and geckos), native orchids, and any dragonflies or aquatic life. These species are seen less often, and we don't have that much footage of them.
Who knows, you might help us discover a species we didn't know lived in the valley, or save this ecosystem by alerting us to an invasive plant! Your footage might even be featured on or social media (with credit, of course!) 📷
Observations can be made at any time of the year. If you need help figuring out how to do this, check out a handy video guide in our profile!

I’m ready for my close-up! Can you identify any of the animals who got up close and personal with these camera traps?
Thanks to Liz, Heidi, John, Kay, Bob and all our wonderful WildTracker participants for sharing such intimate wildlife moments… and a few surprise appearances from some... more domestic characters 😉

One of my favourite fungi species: The Ballerina Waxcap 🩰🍄🟫
These and lots of other brightly coloured Waxcap mushrooms can be found in grassland habitats at this time of year (Go check out your local cemetery!🪦 as these tend to be good places to spot them).
If you ...go out looking for waxcaps submit your findings to the Waxcap Watch citizen science project run by plantlife.loveplants
You don’t need to be an expert in Waxcap ID to take part you just need to identify the colours of waxcaps you spotted in an area! 🌈 🍄

And with that... our 2025 Summer Arctic season comes to a close 💙
Over the last 3 months this ship has been completing a four phase Arctic expedition, and these photos are a tiny snapshot into the incredible landscapes they visited.
During their journey they completed a ...circumnavigation of Svalbard, sailed to Greenland, on to Iceland and finished their journey in Norway.
Beyond just a sailing voyage this trip had an important mission - to collect Citizen Science data and shed light on the continuing influence of the changing climate on the Polar Regions.
And we're excited to share that their voyages for 2026 are already live!
Could you see yourself joining their guest crew?
Find out more via our website linked in bio - or drop a hi in the comments and we can DM you a link!

This weekend is the #greatukwaterblitz and as usual I sampled the River Loxley in the valley below our village. Both samples showed a healthy river which I’m so pleased has been the case for the last couple of years.
