// Triple your impact for corals 💜🪸
Today is Give Miami Day and we are thrilled to share that the Carolan Foundation has very generously committed $50,000 to our campaign so they will match your gifts 2:1, up to $25,000. That means every dollar you donate to Rescue a Reef today will …have TRIPLE THE IMPACT!
As the University of miamirosenstiel’s coral conservation program, we are dedicated to researching and restoring coral reef ecosystems. To date, we have engaged 1,000s of community members on conservation and outplanted 10,000s of coral colonies back onto local reefs. Your support will go directly towards advancing these critical efforts!
There is no better time to help us on our mission to conserve and restore Florida’s Coral Reef!
Follow the link in our bio to make a gift today and triple your impact 🙌 🙌🙌
Please help us spread the word by sharing this post with family, friends, and social feeds too! Thank you — we are so grateful for all your support!

Happy international GIS day! Geographical information systems (GIS) is a technology that captures, stores, analyzes, and visualizes geographic data to understand relationships and trends. This technology has become a huge component of shark science, allowing us to visualize individual tagged sharks… and see how they interact with various environmental factors. Our own undergrad, Kiki Kappos has utilized this technology to produce the results she presented in her honors thesis!

Why it’s so important to protect wombats!
1. Look at that face! How could anyone not want to save wombats, they are beautiful animals each with their own unique personalities.
2. Wombats are so important to the Australian ecosystem. By digging burrows, wombats promote soil health and …help to distribute fungal spores deep into the ground, as well as providing safe havens for other wildlife.
3. Sadly Australian wildlife are seriously undervalued and not given the respect they deserve, they have more right to this land than we do and we should all be protecting them.

Dicyrtoma fusca var. rufescens
Springtail season has begun! It's that time of year again, most of the usual summer macro subjects are gone and I'll spend the next few months crawling around the forest floor looking for these wonderful tiny soil animals!
This was quite a… cool find last weekend, a very relaxed globular springtail that was sitting on a fuzzy white fungus. While this species normally has entirely black eyes, this individual is of a different color variation which has these bright orange eye patches. I had only seen this color morph once before, so it was very cool to find one at my local forest spot where I've been hundreds of times before!
I need to get back into practice stacking with the laowa 25mm, keeping steady above 4:1magnification at f/2.8 is quite a challenge, but definitely worth it for shots like this 🙂

On This Day – November 12-13, 1833
The Leonid meteor storm lit up the night sky across the United States, astonishing those awake to witness as between 50,000 and 150,000 meteors fell each hour. Yale professor Denison Olmsted, eager to understand the phenomenon, wrote a letter to the New …Haven Daily Herald, asking the public for any information about what they saw. Responses poured in from across the country, allowing Olmsted to crowdsource eyewitness accounts to study the meteor storm. His findings, published in 1834, marked an early example of citizen science, as Olmsted used everyday descriptions to advance our understanding of meteors.

// Sanctuary Solutions 🪸 🌊
Our team was fortunate to be able to present and participate in the marinesanctuaryfdn’s “Sanctuary Solutions” coral thermal stress design thinking challenge last week in Key Largo, FL! The workshop brought coral restoration practitioners, community …stewards, blue tech engineers, and noaa reef managers to hear ideas from some of the best and brightest students across the United States and brainstorm how to bring their solutions into practice.
A huge congratulations to the univmiami’s team from the umiamiengineering school on their grand prize-winning idea centered around shading critical coral nursery and reef sites with their “HexHive” design! We look forward to continuing these conversations with all of the competing schools and hearing them present at the coralrestorationconsortium’s Reef Futures conference as well as the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Capitol Hill Ocean Week!
Complex problems require complex solutions so we were excited to see so many different disciplines and stakeholders come together to better protect and conserve our coral reefs!
