A Revolutionary Leap in Citizen Science and Libraries
By Vivienne Byrd & Nurfarawahidah,B.
In the heart of Malaysia, a transformative initiative has been unfurling, blending the rich worlds of libraries and citizen science into a vibrant tapestry of learning, discovery, and community engagement. Spearheaded by the visionary efforts of the Librarians Association of Malaysia, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and various academic institutions, the “Bridging Worlds: Libraries as Connectors in Citizen Science” initiative has redefined the role of libraries in the digital age, specifically in the citizen science movement. This remarkable program, running from February 19th to 28th, 2024, not only fostered a collaborative culture among librarians, researchers, and students but also underscored the pivotal role of libraries as hubs for citizen science. Collaborators include the Department of Library and Information Science, Universiti Malaya, and the Digital Scholarship and Information Commons Department in Kuala Lumpur; Al-Bukhari Library, UiTM Pahang, and Dar Al-Hikmah Library at IIUM in Kuantan, Pahang; the Office of Library and Knowledge Management at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan in Kelantan; and Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in Sarawak. Additionally, the Committee on Regional and International Relations and Committee on Promotion, Librarians Association of Malaysia(PPM) have played critical roles in facilitating regional and international collaborations. These partnerships have significantly enhanced the initiative’s reach and effectiveness, promoting a culture of shared knowledge and citizen science research across Malaysia.
The program’s objectives were clear: increase awareness of citizen science among the library community, explore libraries’ roles in supporting citizen science projects, foster collaboration across disciplines, and equip participants with the necessary skills to initiate and engage in citizen science activities. By achieving these goals, the initiative has laid a solid foundation for future collaborations, paving the way for libraries to play an even more significant role in the citizen science movement. The initiative featured a rich array of activities, from workshops and practical sessions on tools like iNaturalist to insightful discussions on biodiversity and climate change, demonstrating the dynamic and multifaceted nature of citizen science.
Building a Future Together
The “Bridging Worlds” initiative has set a new benchmark for community engagement and scientific inquiry, demonstrating the untapped potential of libraries as catalysts for citizen science. The enthusiasm and participation levels across Malaysia have been testament to the program’s success, with significant physical and online engagement underscoring its appeal and impact.
As we look to the future, the plans are ambitious and forward-thinking. Expanding collaborations with global observation projects and integrating citizen science more deeply into library programs are just the beginning. The aim is to not only continue this journey of exploration and discovery, but also to document and share the successes and lessons learned from this initiative, inspiring others to join in this movement.
A Blueprint for the Future
Incorporating the transformative work of Vivienne Byrd at the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL), the “Bridging Worlds” initiative not only showcases the critical role of libraries in citizen science but also provides a blueprint for how libraries can engage communities in meaningful scientific inquiry. Through projects that span urban biodiversity to astronomy, Byrd’s leadership at the LAPL exemplifies the power of libraries to foster a community of engaged citizen scientists, contributing valuable data to global scientific research and empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to explore and protect their world. The work of Vivienne Byrd at the LAPL serves as an inspiring example for libraries worldwide, illustrating how they can transcend traditional roles to become active participants in the scientific community and agents of change within their communities. As “Bridging Worlds” looks ahead, the achievements of the LAPL underscore the vast potential for libraries to lead in the citizen science movement, inspiring a global network of library-based citizen science projects.
A Community United
The Bridging Worlds initiative is more than just a program; it’s a community of passionate individuals united by a shared vision of leveraging libraries to enhance scientific literacy and engagement among the public. Through this initiative, libraries have been reaffirmed as essential community hubs for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation in citizen science.
This initiative represents a collaborative effort that has significantly enhanced the field of citizen science in Malaysia, setting a new standard for libraries worldwide. The combined dedication of all participants has paved the way for future explorations at the intersection of libraries and citizen science. We are excited to continue this journey, building on our current foundations to expand the possibilities for community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. Join us as we bridge diverse worlds, foster new discoveries, and empower communities to shape a better future.
