About the Boot Camp

Citizen science has the power to bridge the gap between research and society — empowering the public to actively contribute to scientific discovery. This boot camp will focus on the ways climate change reveals itself in the sun, clouds, moon, and stars, inviting participants to discover four cosmic modules that blend knowledge sharing, observation, and hands-on field research.

Through interactive sessions, workshops, and stargazing activities, participants will engage directly with climate data, storytelling, and scientific tools that make global change visible, relatable, and actionable.

Objectives

The Citizen Science Boot Camp 2025 is guided by five key objectives:

  1. Positioning UTM as a center for eco-tourism that positively impacts global perceptions of the university.
  2. Establishing UTM Library as a Citizen Science hub, connecting researchers with the community.
  3. Integrating Citizen Science into UTM Library’s community service programs.
  4. Making Citizen Science more accessible through public exposure, knowledge sharing, and fieldwork opportunities.
  5. Encouraging public participation in observing, recording, and understanding climate change via citizen-driven data and storytelling.

Why You Should Join

By joining this boot camp, you will:

  • Empower Yourself as a Trainer — Gain skills and confidence to lead and mentor others in citizen science projects.
  • Engage the Community — Strengthen the bridge between science and society by raising awareness of pressing environmental issues.
  • Contribute to Real Research — Help generate valuable data that supports scientific studies and influences policy.
  • Create Global Impact — Be part of a movement tackling global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss.
  • Expand Your Knowledge — Learn citizen science methods, tools, and best practices from experienced trainers.
  • Build Networks — Connect with like-minded individuals, researchers, and citizen scientists worldwide.
  • Grow Personally and Professionally — Enhance leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Contribute Real Data for Research and Policy — Your observations become part of broader environmental research efforts.

Discover the Cosmos

This year’s theme brings a celestial twist to climate science, with participants exploring four cosmic modules:

☀️ Sun | ☁️ Clouds | 🌙 Moon | ⭐ Stars

Together, these modules highlight how natural phenomena in the sky can be powerful indicators of our changing climate — making science both visible and accessible to all.

📍 Mark your calendars, spread the word, and join us in Johor Bahru this September to be part of a movement where science meets community under the open sky.
