Announcing the Asia Nature Challenge
CitizenScience.Asia is proud to announce the launch of the Asia Nature Challenge (ANC), a continent-wide citizen science event designed to significantly enhance biodiversity data collection across Asia. Mobilising citizen scientists across the region for a groundbreaking biodiversity initiative from October 18 to 27.
Empowering Through Knowledge: Bridging Worlds with Vivienne Byrd
In the heart of Malaysia, a transformative initiative has been unfurling, blending the rich worlds of libraries and citizen science into a vibrant tapestry of learning, discovery, and community engagement. Searching for Hong Kong’s Jellyfish
Jellyfish are a key species in marine ecosystems, although the extent of their occurrence and diversity is likely underestimated, particularly for biodiversity-rich locations such as Asia. The Hong Kong Jellyfish Project is a citizen science initiative seeking more information about jellyfish found in Hong Kong biodiverse and rich marine waters.
CitizenScience.Asia is now a UN Accredited NGO!
It’s a real privilege and pleasure to announce that CitizenScience.Asia is now a formally accredited NGO by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which has also granted us observer status for […]
It’s Official: Citizen Science goes Global!
Earlier this week, my colleagues and I had the pleasure of being part of a historical moment: the official formalisation of the Citizen Science Global Partnership (CSGP). CitizenScience.Asia is proud to have been there from the beginning in Nairobi in 2017 where the establishment of a Global Secretariat was first proposed. An inaugural General Assembly was…

We’ve been getting reports of By-the-Wind Sailors washing up on beaches in Cornwall and Wales, so we thought we'd share some interesting facts about them for this week’s #SpeciesSpotlight:
– Their characteristic sail gives them their name – By-the-Wind Sailor
– They aren’t an …individual animal but a colony of polyps that share a digestive system
– They are passive in nearly all things they do – they have no independent form of movement and drift at the whim of the wind
– They tend to aggregate in swarms and can be found washed up in their hundreds or even thousands after stormy weather
– They use stinging tentacles to prey on young fish and other small animals while they travel
– Their venom is considered harmless to humans but some people may react to it
– They reproduce asexually through a process called budding. They clone themselves then the clones “bud” off and join with other compatible polyps to create a colony
Have you ever spotted one? If you do see one, please report it to us -> mcsuk.org/sightings (link in bio)

🌊✨ For this coming low tide cycle, I’ll be out exploring the lesser-documented edges of olympic_nps —cloaked coastlines, off-map beaches, and tidepooling sites you won’t find on anyone’s “best of” lists (and let's keep it that way). These places hold secrets.
As far …as I know, the last real slug survey of this area was done in 1997 by Jeff Goddard (legend). Since then? Not much. And even in just a few trips, I’ve already found species in places they weren’t previously known to exist.
This is not just exploration. It’s contribution. It’s documentation. It’s communion.
Expect sea stacks. Expect slugs. Expect me to be a little feral.

We asked you to help us track three signs of spring: frogspawn, blackthorn blossom and song thrush song 👀
Thanks to you, we received 22,570 records from across the UK 📝
As signs of spring change, it’s crucial to track these shifts to monitor nature’s health 🔍
…
Your observations will help us understand how climate change is affecting wildlife and timings in nature 🌸

The moths have been pretty fantastic so far for May. A far cry from the slow start we had last year 🌞.
Here’s a dump of some of the nice visitors I’ve had- they’re too nice to stay hidden in the depths of my camera roll ✨
